Reception and Key Stage 1

Young children usually begin their schooling journey with wonder and excitement at the age of 4 or 5 in the Reception (also known as Early Years) class before progressing through Years 1 and 2.

Reading

The most important academic skill taught in Reception and Key Stage 1 is undoubtedly reading. In most English schools, synthetic phonics is the primary method through which reading is taught. Children learn to tune-in to different individual sounds (phonemes) and learn to recognise the letter or letters (graphemes) that are used to represent them. Reading is a complex code and as such takes plenty of practice from our young learners. I run short, fun, interactive phonics sessions online and in-person for different stages of phonics learning. If you are not sure what stage your child is at, or what level they need, please contact me and I shall be able to help. I also run online reading clubs suitable for children from 4-7 which aim to foster a love of reading, whilst drawing in the phonics and comprehension skills your child needs.

Maths

Mathematical concepts in the early years are best taught through practical resources and real life scenarios. I can offer tailor-made play-based maths sessions in-person and online for children aged 4-7. I have an excellent knowledge of the KS1 curriculum and the standards required at the end of year 2.
