What is the 11+?
The 11+ is an examination sat to gain admission to an academically selective secondary school (grammar school).
What is the CSSE 11+?
In Colchester, the two grammar schools are Colchester Royal Grammar School for boys and Colchester County High School for girls. Both are members of the Consortium of Selective School in Essex (C.S.S.E.). It is very important to note when hiring a tutor or buying revision guides that your child will be sitting the CSSE 11+. Other selective schools in other parts of the country set different 11+ exams, GL or CEM for example, so ensure that you prepare for the right test!
What is on the test?
The CSSE 11+ consists of two tests sat one after the other on the same day:
- Maths
- English
- Section 1 – Comprehension
- Section 2 – Applied Reasoning
- Section 3 – Continuous Writing
Registering for the CSSE 11+
Taking the CSSE 11+ is optional and parents must take it upon themselves to register their child to take the test in advance. Most primary school do not get involved in the process and are unlikely to send out reminders. See the CSSE website for details on how to register and registration deadlines: www.csse.org.uk
How can Bright Futures Tutoring help my child prepare for the test?
The CSSE 11+ examination is unlike any other test your child has sat in primary school. It is set out in a different way to the SATs and is significantly more challenging. There are also types of questions, such as the applied reasoning, which your child may have never come across before. It therefore makes sense to help them to prepare and give them the best chance of success.
One-to-One Tutoring
In 1:1 tuition sessions, I am able to offer the greatest level of personalised teaching. I start each session with a plan, but continually assess your child’s understanding throughout, changing direction and teaching methods as required.
Group Tutoring
Small groups can be a less intimidating option for a child as they replicate the classroom feel they are used to, but with a smaller number of students, therefore a greater level of support. Sessions can still be paced according to children’s needs and there are opportunities for children to work collaboratively.
