Key Stage 2 (KS2) covers children from 7 until 11 years old, or school years 3 to 6.

Reading and Phonics
From year 3, children are expected to be fluent readers in schools and, generally, whole-class phonics sessions will have stopped at this stage. However in reality many children at this young age have not quite mastered reading and still need some extra support. They may be still to pass the Phonics Screening Check, or may have passed the check but are still not able to blend sounds quick enough in their head to read effectively for meaning. They may in fact be one of the children for whom synthetic phonics has never ‘clicked’, and you are looking for guidance as to other ways that they can learn to read. Please be assured that I have extensive experience of over-coming these road blocks and am confident that I can not only get your child to be a competent, fluent reader, but also a lover of books. I offer one-to-one phonics and reading sessions as well as occasionally running small group sessions in-person and online.

Maths and English
The vast majority of the tutoring I do for KS2 is in Maths and English – the three Rs. Your child will be studying these subjects for many years to come and having good GCSEs in them is necessary for many future careers. Therefore it is imperative that we ensure children get the support they need as early as possible during their primary school years. It may be that you are not quite sure what your child needs or you simply have a school report with some wordy targets on it. You may just have a feeling that a bit of extra support could help your child to fly and achieve their potential. In the first tutoring session, I will assess where your child is at and be able to make a plan of action to support their progress through fun, engaging and tailor-made sessions.

Science and the Foundation Subjects
Subjects, such as History, Science, Art and Geography are so important for giving children and broad, balanced and exciting learning experience in their young years. In particular if your child is Electively Home Educated you may be interested in my Online Foundation Subject lessons. Contact me to find out about upcoming lessons.

SATs
At the end of Key Stage 2, most children in England sit externally set and marked tests in:
- Reading
- Maths
- Grammar, punctuation and spelling
Writing (and other subjects) will be assessed in-house by the teachers in their school. It is imperative that children do not worry excessively about these tests – learning is a long and complex journey that must not be judged by one benchmark alone. That being said, it is natural that we want our children to do as well as possible in their SATs and for them to feel confident going into the tests. One-to-one tutoring sessions during year 6 can be really beneficial to help children to make accelerated progress and feel prepared for the upcoming tests, as well as secure in their abilities going in secondary school.
